The Challenge
Telstra required a comprehensive building automation and control solution across their data centre portfolio. Existing systems provided limited granularity. HVAC control was basic, environmental monitoring only operated at the CRAH unit level rather than individual racks, and there was no integrated energy management or environmental analysis capability. With increasing rack densities, stricter customer SLA requirements and growing energy costs, Telstra needed a partner to deliver full HVAC control, IT rack infrastructure installation, continuous energy monitoring and detailed environmental analysis across multiple facilities.
Our Solution
Synchronous Building Automation delivered a complete data centre automation solution encompassing control, installation and monitoring. We installed Distech Controls ECLYPSE controllers for full HVAC management, including CRAH units with variable speed fan control, chilled water valve modulation and hot/cold aisle containment strategies. Our team installed IT rack infrastructure with SM5000 Multi-Sensor Data Acquisition Controllers and TH-485 temperature and humidity probes at each rack, providing granular inlet and exhaust monitoring via MQTT and Modbus TCP. Janitza UMG energy meters were deployed at PDU and mechanical switchboard level for real-time power measurement, continuous PUE calculation and energy cost allocation. All data feeds into the Sync DCiM Platform, enabling comprehensive environmental analysis, automated alerting for environmental excursions and ongoing performance optimisation.
